The intent of this page is simply to invite the reader into my process of creating a poem. I have shared images of my notebook, and the editing of a poem before I post the final form of the poem. I hope you find it meaningful!

I chose to post this draft because it is actually a re-write, and I knew that resurrecting the poem, in a sense, would be an adventurous process. After a time of respite, I decided to revisit a very old poem about my relationship with a former boyfriend, many years ago. Several years back I decided to write a poem which gave expression to the more personal side of the relationship. It was called “Mountain Aria,” because he lived in a beautiful home in the mountains. When I wrote this poem, it was accepted into a German literary magazine called Dreich. However, when I recently revisited the poem, I thought that it was absolutely awful, poetically speaking. I tried to polish it, but no amount of polishing or reworking could help. And so I wound up keeping a rendition of the first phrase and a few images, including “chipping-sparrow heart” and a few others. But overall, I changed it. However, the poem which I so disliked, despite my fumbling around, did have some thematic material which I carried over into this poem. It spoke of lament and grief, and alluded to unlikely forces that not only bond two people with such ferocity, but tear them apart in like fashion. The poem is possessed of sensuality, and while it may not sit well with all, it is a part of the human experience, and anything that is a part of the human experience is never excluded from God’s presence, grace, and good intent for all people.

This page shows my efforts to create what resulted in the following stanza:
Fields of ardent light
maiden
her skirts of rose-fallen sash
spread for plough
and piercing blade
